Façade / Skin

PART 1
Assigned August 26
Due Sept 5

  • Read Stan Allen’s “matt urbanism: the thick 2-d”.
  • Select and research an analogue that yields both formal/organizational traits for a potential façade/skin addressing he program of adaptability/customization.
  • Suggested analogues: fabrics, nesting boxes, patters, plants, puzzles, interlocking joinery, (some type of repeatable, inter-connectable image/surface/texture/element).
  • The assignment is to diagram your analogue as to how it performs (folding, nesting, imbrications, layering, draping, tessellating).
  • You are to develop a surface assembly model in Rhino. This surface should be a highly intricate “thick 2d” assembly and have the potential to modulate light, air, privacy, (think aperture, sunscreen, balcony, bed, furniture).

The key to this assignment is habitation- being able to occupy physically the diagram with the body.

PART 2
Assigned Sept 5
Pin up review Sept 12

Explore your analogue at multiple scales.

  • You are to occupy the analogue/pattern with the body through a performative action such as sitting
  • sleeping, reading, studying, etc.
  • Question through the use of multiple scales how the body and program interface (shrink, enlarge, stretch, etc.).
  • In parallel with the digital models, develop a 12” x 12” x 2” (or thicker) laser cut/milled model out of thin basswood sheets or other suitable material.
  • Draw a ¼” = 1’0”section from the exterior to the conditioned space to demonstrate the programmatic/occupational potential of the façade.
